Khao Yoi Ethnical Village

Khao Yoi Sacred Caves and Ethical Community
Khao Yoi is in the North of Phetchaburi. It is always the first stop for tourists who are visiting Phetchaburi. The popular attractions are Khao Yoi Cave, Wat Kuti’s teakwood ordination hall, and Thai Song Dam community.
The legend also tells that in his monkhood King Mongkut (King Rama IV), the King who had Khaowang Palace built, once made a pilgrimage to Khaoyoi Cave and stayed several nights in the cave for meditation practice.
Wat Kuti’s ordination hall or Ubosot was supposedly built in 1930 (2473 B.E.). The exotic carved exterior teakwood walls make the Ubosot very famous. There are twenty pieces of the wonderful wood carving that depicts some scenes of the Buddhist Scripture of Jataka, the ten previous lives of the Lord Buddha.

THAI SONGDAM ETHNICAL COMMUNITY CULTURAL CENTER
Thai Songdam people in Khao Yoi, also called Lao Song, is one of the folk communities living in some provinces in Thailand. Their ancestors migrated from the north of Vietnam and Laos long time ago. These people have their unique way of life and traditions. They have their own dialect and written language. They like to dress in black clothes, so they are called Songdam. “Song” means “wear” and “Dam” means “black.” Visitors can learn about their traditional lifestyle at The Thai Songdam Cultural Centre that exhibits utensils, model houses, clothes, and traditional characters. There are also weaving and basketry demonstrations, their famous talented skills. Thai Songdam’s old customs and traditions are still occasionally practiced, especially on Songkran Festival in April, when they relatives from other villages come togather to celebrate this Thai traditional New Year. They will have a big feast and have fun dancing their traditional style. This is fun to observe and take picture.
